Signs From God

Bobservations Column
By Pastor Bob Lawrenz

In Genesis 9:11, we find God’s Covenant promise to never again destroy the Earth with a flood. This is part of the Noahic Covenant, promises God made to Noah. As with all God’s Covenants, His promises will hold throughout the existence of the earth: “...neither shall there any more be a flood to destroy the earth.” Protected from world-wide flood, we are not protected from drought!

Time and again, God sent a lack of rain and severe drought as judgment upon one nation or another because of their sin(s). The Israelites were subject to these judgments also. Jacob’s sons were driven to Egypt because of a drought in the land. And, Elijah the Prophet warned King Ahab that it would not rain in the land for three years. This drought is referenced later on by the Prophets Amos and Ezekiel 22:24, and later in Ezekiel 37, so this is well documented!

Under the Palestinian Covenant of Deuteronomy 30, judgments were laid out for disobedience to God’s Commandments and statutes. These are found in Deuteronomy 28, along with blessings for obedience to God’s Word. Droughts are warned of in this covenant in Deut. 28:24. God had blessed the nation abundantly, yet they grew weary of teaching their children apparently, and the generations forgot about God.

One may ask how any of this applies to us? As Christians living in a land founded upon Biblical principles and inhabited by many who have been grafted into God’s people, we also will be either blessed for obedience, or judged for disobedience to God’s Word. If you read through Deuteronomy 28:15-47, you will see how the USA has suffered with many of the things described in these verses. This has been our legacy since 1963.

In a landmark case of the US Supreme Court, it was decided that Bible reading in Public Schools was unconstitutional (Abington School District v. Schempp, 374 U.S. 203, US Supreme Court, 1963) Today, not only are adults not being reminded, but our children are no longer even exposed to God’s Word in many families. And we wonder why the whole world is in turmoil?
It’s not just the U.S. !

“And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD;
and great shall be the peace of thy children.” – Isaiah 54:13
